ICANN Opens Application Window for Custom gTLDs

Organizations can now apply for their own generic top-level domain. tldbox supports applicants with technical and organizational expertise.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has opened the application window for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs). For the first time in over a decade, companies, cities, government agencies, and organizations can apply for their own domain extensions such as .brand, .city, or .industry.

According to ICANN, gTLDs strengthen brand trust, establish digital identities, and enable intuitive online navigation. As early as 2012, over 1,200 new domain extensions were introduced, such as .berlin, .bank, and .eco.

tldbox GmbH supports companies and organizations throughout the entire lifecycle of a gTLD—from strategic preparation and the assessment of feasibility, business case, and organizational readiness, through the preparation of the ICANN application and technical planning, to secure operation on highly available European infrastructure.

As a Registry Service Provider (RSP), tldbox GmbH supports companies, regions, and organizations, particularly in the technical operation of gTLDs. Its range of services includes the provision and operation of core registry services for new and existing gTLDs.

For the 2026 application round, tldbox GmbH was evaluated by ICANN in the MAIN, DNS, and DNSSEC categories. This makes tldbox GmbH one of the Registry Service Providers that can be selected as technical partners for applicants under the New gTLD Program.
